Spier started his career at Braxton Associates in 1988, where he advised companies on business strategy. Two years later, he moved to D.H. Blair, where he provided funding for new tech startups.

Guy founded his hedge fund Aquamarine Capital in 1997 with funds from family and friends, building on the structure of Warren Buffett’s partnerships in the 1950s.

Educationally, Spier studied politics and economics at Oxford and subsequently earned an MBA at Harvard. He is the author of the inspiring book “The Education of a Value Investor”, where he describes his own development and the shift from workshop and Wall Street to value investing in Zurich, where he lives today.

Investment philosophy

Guy Spier is, in his own words, a ‘fervent Warren Buffett disciple’ and follows Buffett’s approach to value investing and asset allocation. His approach is primarily global, long-term and value-focused.

A unique characteristic of Spier’s portfolio is how few changes occur quarter to quarter. It can often take six months or even years before he makes a deal. At the same time, he is very concentrated with typically 10-20 positions in total.
